Our impact on the Geothermal industry

We offer a product suite with modelling capabilities for many industries, including Leapfrog Geothermal for the geothermal energy sector.

Geothermal energy is heat from the earth

Geothermal energy is now being harnessed by regions world-wide as an affordable, clean, and sustainable energy source. The interactive map below shows the geothermal 2017 electrical generating capacities per country:

Using curiosity as a business tool

By Claire Mahoney

From the time we can speak, we start asking questions: Why is the sky blue? How big is the ocean? Why do the leaves change colour? Being curious is encouraged and rewarded because it leads to a deeper understanding of the world, which helps us operate and survive better as humans.

Curiosity is part of our company culture and we use it for a lot of different reasons: to build better software, understand user needs and help solve complex industry challenges. Even as we grow as a company, we’re still asking the same questions: What does it look like underground? Can we harness the power of a volcano?

By being curious we’ve created multiple opportunities, solved a host of problems and had some enlightening conversations. Here’s how we apply curiosity in our business.

Curiosity for problem-solving

When we heard back in 2014 that some of our customers were having problems managing their model versions, which was hampering their decision-making and costing money at the operations stage, we saw an opportunity to help out and get curious.

We asked some key questions: How are you managing projects now? How are models shared currently? What other decisions depend on the data? What other problems is this causing?

Leapfrog and the Integra Gold Rush Challenge

The 2015 Integra Gold Rush Challenge was a crowd-sourcing competition inviting participants to help uncover the next big gold discovery in Canada’s Val-d’Ors, Quebec. Crowdsourcing offers mining an alternative to traditional approaches as it harnesses the accumulated wisdom of a wide and diverse group of individuals.

Leapfrog was the official 3D modelling partner. With access to over six terabytes of digital mining and exploration data, it was a great opportunity to showcase our powerful FastRBF™ engine. Over 1,300 participants registered to use the free Leapfrog Gold Rush licences we provided, including all of the five finalists.

Geotechnical data collection and presentation – It starts and ends with a vision

We’d like to share this article by Louie Human and Ben Jupp, Principal and Senior Consultants at SRK. The article gives some great advice on best practice approaches to Data Collection as the first step towards minimising uncertainty and input into the advanced technical assessment and design of a caving operation. The article goes on to stress the importance of using 3D visualisation tools such as Leapfrog in engineering, to make the understanding of the data in a spatial context possible.

The authors outline why combining robust data collection with software toolsets that visualise, interrogate and develop geotechnical models is so important and how these ultimately feed into the mine design and decision making process and impact on the safety and economics of recovery.

The article first featured in AusIMM Bulletin in August this year: http://bit.ly/2dPsZa9

Optimum performance with Leapfrog projects

By Tim Schurr

Have you noticed the “.aproj_data” folder that always appears along-side your Leapfrog project file?

If you’ve ever had to move or copy a project to another location, you’ve probably come across it, opened folder using explorer and discovered a whole raft of sub-folders and files and thought “What’s all of this?  Is this really my Leapfrog project?”

In this article, I will explain the reason why Leapfrog saves projects in seemingly such a bizarre way, then I’ll give you a couple of tricks on how to get the best performance and reliability out of your Leapfrog projects.
